Easy Summer Entertaining

For all of us at Melting Messages, lighter summer evenings mean time spent outside socialising with family and friends. Whether you've got a garden, balcony or rooftop or fancy a trip to your local park here are some suggestions for making any event extra special.

Colourful picnic rugs

Colourful picnic rugs are great for lying on, but also provide a cosy covering if it turns chilly. Layer several on the ground with cushions for extra warmth and comfort.

Refresh yourself

Cold drinks are an essential at every summer event. It's helpful to have some thing sizeable filled with lots of iced water to cool drinks - it could be a colourful plastic trug, clean wheelbarrow or cool box.

Let the light in

At Melting Messages, we (obviously!) love candles. They are an inexpensive way to create ambience and (if you throw in a few citronella ones) deter midges and mossies once it starts to get dark. From informal, wide necked jars to sophisticated hurricane lanterns - you can use a whole variety of items to put them in - just make sure they are flameproof.

Add colour in your life

Summer is the time to get really colourful with your crockery and cutlery. If you regularly eat or picnic outside it might be a good idea to invest in some lovely, good quality plastic plates. There are so many to choose from.

Let there be light

From sparkling fairy lights woven through trees to solar stakes in the ground - you can find lights to suit every budget and space.

Enjoy the tasty and fresh food

Cooking outside is one of summer's great pleasures. Barbecues, outside grills, fire pits - from cooking kebabs and steaks to toasting marshmallows everything seems to taste better when it's been cooked outside. With so much delicious, seasonal food at this time of the year you'll be spoilt for choice - steaks, sea food, marinaded chicken, summer fruit & vegetables, crusty bread and cheeses, it all tastes better when the sun shines - just add friends!
